Arabic Verb Patterns (الأوزان)

Arabic verbs follow predictable patterns. The most common pattern is Form I (فَعَلَ):

Past Tense Conjugation (قَالَ — He said)

Common Verb Forms in the Quran

  • Form I (فَعَلَ): خَلَقَ (created), عَلِمَ (knew)
  • Form II (فَعَّلَ): عَلَّمَ (taught), كَبَّرَ (made great)
  • Form IV (أَفْعَلَ): أَرْسَلَ (sent), أَنْزَلَ (revealed/sent down)
  • Form X (ٱسْتَفْعَلَ): ٱسْتَغْفَرَ (sought forgiveness)
