Lesson 22: Introduction to Tajweed

What is Tajweed? (التجويد)

Tajweed means "to beautify" or "to improve". It is the set of rules for correct pronunciation when reciting the Quran. Every letter has a makhraj (point of articulation) and sifat (characteristics).

Why Tajweed Matters

Allah says in the Quran: "And recite the Quran with measured recitation." (Quran 73:4 — وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا)

Key Concepts:

  • Makhraj (مخرج) — Where a letter is pronounced from (throat, tongue, lips, etc.)
  • Sifat (صفة) — Characteristics of a letter (heavy, light, whispering, etc.)
  • Ghunnah (غنة) — Nasal sound for ن and م
  • Qalqalah (قلقلة) — Vibration/bounce for certain letters with sukun
